BET kicked off July with the annual BET Awards in a performance filled evening from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles honouring the best in Black Entertainment. The BET Awards were hosted by actor Samuel L. Jackson.
The night’s festivities opened with a rap performance filled with blanked out words and profanity from Kanye West.
The awards featured performances including Kanye West, Usher, Yolanda Adams, Charles Perry, Nicki Minaj, Melanie Fiona, Diangelo, Maze with Frankie Beverly, Chris Brown, an emotional tribute to Whitney by Maria Carey, Whitney’s mother Cissy Houston sang “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, and Tyga.
The BET Awards paid tribute to artists and pioneers who have passed on over the past year – Hal Jackson, Dick Clark, Don Cornelius, Donna Summer, and Whitney Houston.
Tyler Perry presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Maze and Frankie Beverly.
